Is there a ‘best time’ to have that first cup of coffee?

Chances are, the first thing you reach for in the morning is a cup of coffee. I’ve written previously about the health benefits of the ever-popular pick-me-up and I wouldn’t be without my morning brew.

Recently, however, there has been quite a bit of chatter on social media from influences and podcasters about the caffeine rich beverage. It’s not about the benefits of coffee (they’re already well established), but about when people should have their first cup.

The discussion revolves around the human sleep-wake cycle (or circadian rhythm). Specially, the role of a hormone called cortisol and the way it interacts with coffee.

What is cortisol?

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, which are on top of each kidney. It plays several important roles in the body. Levels of cortisol naturally follow a daily rhythm, with higher levels in the early morning and lower levels in the evening. This rhythm helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle and contributes to alertness and energy levels throughout the day.
