Have you ever had one of the days when you haven’t been able to get anything done, even though you have so many tasks that require your attention?

You start something but give up within moments, perhaps because something else has caught your attention or you’ve convinced yourself the task wasn’t worth doing.

We use many phrases to describe these often psychologically painful experiences that appear to have little causal explanation. If we’re irritable for and unknown reason, we might say we just got out of the wrong side of the bed, an idiom we can trace back to Roman times when getting out of bed on the left side was considered bad luck.

The phrase, feeling out of sorts, however, is less specific. It’s when we don’t feel quite like ourselves. Like our life is out of order.

Where does the feeling come from?

These types of feelings don’t suddenly arrive from nowhere. More often than not, feeling out of sorts is a symptom of something else. Common reasons might include:

Loss of control

We all like to feel we have control over our lives. Sometimes, however, life doesn’t go the way we planned and unexpected things happen.

Worry
